Fiona Seymour-Jesse of SJ Copy came to me asking for a revamp of her website. While the design of the site wasn’t far wrong, it needed sprucing up. It was created using a template, so Fiona was also looking for something more individual, more tailored to her business. The contents were satisfactory, but Fiona wanted to take the opportunity to tidy up and add some extra pages, including a place to feature her newsletters. It seemed clear to me that the business name needed more emphasis, as did the title of each page. Also, the navigation was little more than a series of links, and could be made a design feature.
design considerations
SJ Copy offers services in writing, editing and marketing. As might be expected today, much of Fiona’s work involves writing web content; this suggests the use of high-tech imagery, such as computers. However, Fiona and I felt that computer imagery was too generic for her purposes, as it could signify many types of work, including IT support, programming, web design, and so on. Instead we decided to focus more on more old-fashioned images of pens, books and paper; this emphasises the physical act of writing, and suggests the craft skills available from a wordsmith.
Fiona and I liked the muted turquoise she was already using for the title. Drawing on that as the base colour, I selected complementary colours of magenta, olive green and rusty brown to add a little more oomph to the site through the headings.

The overall feel we aimed for was crisp and clean, with plenty of white space. The site needed to be professional, but also approachable. While we wanted the design to be meaningful and distinctive, the emphasis needed to remain with the content - as SJ Copy is all about creating excellent content!
I feel we came up with the right solution for SJ Copy: a site that will attract and impress both new and existing clients. Fiona was delighted with the results: ‘The site looks really great. I can’t thank you enough!’
