Terry already had a successful website for her coaching and professional speaking business TLC Powertalk. However, the site incorporated a wide range of interests, and Terry felt that her business clients would find the lack of focus to be confusing. She decided to separate out her music interests, and move them into a dedicated website of their own.
Her brief to me was to retain certain elements of the business site, such as the hearts imagery and the purple/blue colour scheme, but also create something new, so that the sites would seem related yet different. Also, the subject matter of music and performing meant the new site could be a little quirkier than the business site.
design considerations
The focus of the new site is Terry’s music, and she already had media players set up on her business site featuring audio and video clips of various performances. It seemed to me that the media player must be a key element for the new site: it must feature on the home page, and play continuously while the visitor browsed through the contents pages. Accordingly I used ‘iframe’ functionality to ensure that the visitor remained on the home page and the player could play without interruption, while the visitor viewed the contents pages in a separate ‘text box’ beside the player.
Terry and I both love purples, and we decided that a range of lilacs and pinks, with occasional reds and blues, would fit with the hearts imagery. I added an artistic ‘splatter’ element to various visual aspects, including the hearts, the rollover states of the navigation buttons, and the background image.

The overall feel we aimed for was warm, fun and creative, much like Terry herself! The site needed to be informative but relaxed, and provide an easy way for Terry to stay in touch with her audience.
I believe we created something that met Terry’s needs in both form and function, style and content. Terry agreed, and said the site was striking! She added, ‘[You] produced a neat and nifty little site for me. It was exactly what I asked for.’
